Nobody in this sector is telling you that once your group home is licensed and producing, you are not just running a business. You are building an asset — and that changes everything about what you should do next.
Part of a bigger question. This is one example of a broader topic — How Do I Build Business Credit?. Start there if you want the full picture.
Your business already has a credit file
This surprises almost everybody running a group home. Your business may already have a file with Dun and Bradstreet, and you may never have contacted them.
D&B has been doing this since 1841 and maintains records on over 170 million businesses. Suppliers, lenders, and larger contract partners routinely check that file before deciding whether to work with you.
So the question is not whether to engage with it. It is whether you are managing it or ignoring it, and almost every small operator in this sector is ignoring it because nobody told them it existed.

What Should You Charge Per Hour?
Put in your costs and your real hours. Get the number you should actually be charging.
The DUNS number is free
A DUNS number is a nine-digit identifier D&B assigns to a business. It is free, and that matters, because an entire industry will charge you for one and you should not pay them.
You request it directly from D&B with your legal business name, address, and basic details. It typically arrives within a few business days, though it can take up to thirty.
You need one if you want D&B to generate credit scores for your group home, if you plan to pursue government contracts, or if you want a formal business credit profile at all.
What PAYDEX measures, and why yours might be empty
PAYDEX runs from 1 to 100 and measures how reliably a business pays its bills. Eighty means you pay on time. Above eighty means you pay early. Below fifty signals a business that frequently pays sixty days or more late.
Here is the part almost nobody knows. It is calculated from payment data that vendors report to D&B, and it only counts trade credit — invoices with payment terms. Most card payments do not count.
Which means your group home does not automatically have a score. D&B needs at least two or three trade references reporting before it can calculate one. If none of your suppliers report, your file stays empty however well you pay.
So ask a supplier directly: do you report to Dun and Bradstreet? Almost nobody in this sector asks, and it is the difference between having a credit identity and not.
Business credit and personal credit are separate
This is the most liberating fact in this area and it is routinely not explained.
Your PAYDEX is tied to your DUNS number and your EIN, not your social security number. It is calculated exclusively from business payment data. Not your personal cards, not your mortgage.
Which means poor personal credit does not automatically damage your business credit, and building strong business credit is genuinely possible for somebody whose personal history is complicated.
I want to be honest about the limit, though. Many small business lenders will look at both. A separate business credit identity is a real advantage. It is not a way around your personal history entirely, and anybody telling you it is has something to sell.
The part that actually stops people
The obstacle is rarely knowledge. Most people running a group home broadly know what they should be doing, and the gap between knowing and doing is where the difficulty sits.
Part of it is that the licensing guides told you what to do to open and then stopped. Nobody handed you the business side, so it waits behind whatever is loudest that day.
Part of it is that the arithmetic is uncomfortable. Working out what you actually earn per hour of your life is not a pleasant afternoon, which is exactly why almost nobody does it.
Do it anyway. The number is already true whether or not you look at it, and knowing it is the only way the next year comes out differently.
A month that would actually move this
Week one, work out the arithmetic. Gross, minus every cost, divided by the hours you actually work including the nights on call. That figure is the honest measure.
Week two, separate the money completely if you have not. Business account, business only. That is what turns a licensed operation into an asset somebody could buy or lend against.
Week three, write down how the standard day runs. One page. That page is the beginning of a business that could exist without you standing in the middle of it.
Week four, request the DUNS number. It is free, it takes a few days, and the credit identity takes six to twelve months to build. Starting now means having it when you need it.
That is a month, it costs nothing, and it moves you further than most owners in this sector move in a year.
The numbers to know about your own group home
Very few owners in this sector can answer these quickly, and each one is worth an afternoon.
What does your operation actually net, after everything, per hour of your life? Including the nights on call. Including the shift you covered because somebody did not turn up. Including the compliance paperwork nobody bills for. That figure is the honest measure and almost nobody calculates it.
What is your occupancy across a year rather than today? A full house this month tells you very little. The pattern across twelve months tells you whether the business is stable.
What share of your revenue comes from one payer? If the answer is most of it, a rate change or a policy shift takes the whole business, and a lender or a buyer would spot that immediately.
Could somebody else run this from what is written down? If the honest answer is no, then everything the operation knows lives in your head, and a head is not an asset anybody can value.
What compounds quietly
None of this is exciting. Separating the accounts. Writing down how the standard day runs. Requesting a free identifier from a company most people have never heard of.
But that is precisely the work that converts a licensed operation which makes money into a licensed operation which has value, and the gap between those two is where most owners in this sector get stuck for years without realising there was a gap.
It also compounds. An operation with two years of clean records is in a completely different position from one with two years of good intentions, and the difference was an hour a month.
Start now rather than when you need it. Business credit takes six to twelve months to establish. Records cannot be created retroactively. The version of you who needs this in two years is depending on what you do this month.
An honest word about this sector
I want to be straight, because a great deal of what is written about this business is written by people selling licensing help.
This is a genuinely demanding business. The regulation is heavy, the staffing is difficult, the reimbursement is slow, and the responsibility is real. Anybody presenting it as easy money has not run one.
It is also a business where the arithmetic works for a lot of people, where the demand is not going away, and where a well-run operation becomes a genuinely valuable asset.
Both of those things are true. What decides which one you experience is almost entirely whether you did the arithmetic before you signed the lease, and whether you built the systems before you needed them.

Square Banking
Separating the business money completely is what turns a thing which makes money into an asset. Square Checking has no monthly fee and no minimum balance, and your sales land immediately rather than waiting one to two business days for a transfer.

Common questions
How long before this starts working?
Longer than most people hope and sooner than most people fear. Give it a few months of steady effort rather than a few weeks, and judge it on whether enquiries are trending up rather than on any single week.
Do I need to spend money to start?
No. The highest-leverage steps here are free, and they are the ones almost nobody does. Tools help you measure and move faster. They do not do the work.
What if I have no time?
Then pick one thing from this and do it properly rather than five things badly. One change that actually happens beats a list you never start.
Is AI going to replace this work?
Not the work itself. It is genuinely useful for the repetitive parts around the work, and that is where the hours come back. The judgment stays yours, and that is what you are being paid for.
