Your business may already have a credit file you never created, and almost nobody running a small business knows it exists.
Your business already has a credit file
This surprises almost everybody. Your business may already have a file with Dun and Bradstreet, and you may never have contacted them.
D&B has been doing this since 1841 and maintains records on over 170 million businesses. Suppliers, lenders, and larger customers routinely check that file before deciding whether to work with you.
So the question is not whether to engage with it. It is whether you are managing it or ignoring it, and almost every small owner is ignoring it because nobody told them it existed.

Which System Is Right For You?
Get matched to the right starting point based on where you actually are right now.
The DUNS number is free
A DUNS number is a nine-digit identifier D&B assigns to a business. It is free, and that matters, because an entire industry will charge you for one and you should not pay them.
You request it directly with your legal business name, address, and basic details. It typically arrives within a few business days, though it can take up to thirty.
You need one if you want credit scores generated for your business, if you plan to pursue government contracts, or if you want a formal business credit profile at all.
What PAYDEX measures, and why yours might be empty
PAYDEX runs from 1 to 100 and measures how reliably a business pays its bills. Eighty means you pay on time. Above eighty means you pay early. Below fifty signals a business that frequently pays sixty days or more late.
Here is the part almost nobody knows. It is calculated from payment data that vendors report, and it only counts trade credit — invoices with payment terms. Most card payments do not count.
Which means your business does not automatically have a score. Two or three trade references need to be reporting before one can be calculated. If none of your suppliers report, your file stays empty however well you pay.
So ask a supplier directly: do you report to Dun and Bradstreet? Almost nobody asks, and it is the difference between having a credit identity and not.
Business credit and personal credit are separate
This is the most liberating fact in this area and it is routinely not explained.
Your business credit is tied to your DUNS number and your EIN, not your social security number. It is calculated exclusively from business payment data. Not your personal cards, not your mortgage.
Which means poor personal credit does not automatically damage your business credit, and building strong business credit is genuinely possible for somebody whose personal history is complicated.
I want to be honest about the limit. Many small business lenders will look at both. A separate business credit identity is a real advantage. It is not a way around your personal history entirely, and anybody telling you it is has something to sell.
What I will not tell you about funding
I cannot tell you that doing this will get you approved for anything. Whether a lender says yes depends on your numbers, your industry, the amount, and the lender. Anybody promising you approval is selling something.
What is true is narrower and still worth a great deal. A business with a clean credit file, documented revenue, and accurate records is in a genuinely different position from one without. It has more options and it gets taken more seriously.
So build the file because it opens doors, not because it guarantees anything. Then go and have the conversation with an actual lender, with your actual numbers.
Be suspicious of anybody selling shelf corporations, credit stacking, or guaranteed approval. The DUNS number is free. Nobody should charge you for it.
Where this usually stalls
The obstacle is rarely knowledge. Most owners broadly understand what they should be doing, and the gap between knowing and doing is where the difficulty actually sits.
Part of it is that the right action is frequently uncomfortable. Asking somebody for money. Quoting a number that feels high. Finding out something you suspected.
Thirty-three percent of my audience told me they research all day and never start. Research feels like progress and carries no risk of being wrong in public. But one tracked week of doing beats one more course, every time.
So make it deliberate. Put a specific hour aside. One thing done properly beats a list you never start.
The opening month, mapped out
Week one, work out the number. Whatever this is about, calculate your own version rather than accepting somebody else's.
Week two, do the free thing. There is always one, and it is usually the highest-return hour available to you.
Week three, put something real in front of somebody real. Not a plan. An offer, with a price and a way to pay.
Week four, look honestly at what happened and fix the one thing that clearly went wrong.
That is a month, it costs nothing, and it moves you further than another year of reading would.
When you can expect this to work
The first stretch is quiet. Very few people understand that you exist and establishing that takes longer than any plan admits. This is normal and it is not evidence the idea was wrong.
The first real money frequently arrives between month two and month four, and it is smaller than you hoped. It matters enormously anyway, because it proves the loop closes.
After that it compounds, slowly and then less slowly. The people it works for are not the talented ones. They are the ones still going when the fast starters have already moved on.
Fifty-two percent of my audience chose the phrase I am meant for more. If that is you, what stands between you and it is almost never information. It is a decision, followed by an unglamorous week.

The numbers worth knowing about your own business
Very few owners can answer these quickly, and each one is worth an afternoon of your time.
What does one hour of your work genuinely earn, once you count the preparation, the admin, and the follow-up nobody pays for? That figure is almost always lower than the one in your head, and it changes what you accept.
How did your last ten customers actually find you? Ask every caller and write it down. That single question, asked for two months, will tell you more than most analytics tools, and the answer usually surprises people.
What did the business genuinely earn last year, after everything? Not revenue. What was left. Most owners understand one of those numbers and not the other, and it is usually the wrong one.
Could somebody else run this from what is written down? If the honest answer is no, then everything the business knows lives in your head, and a head is not an asset anybody can value.
None of this requires software. It requires an hour and a willingness to see the answer, and the numbers are already true whether or not you look at them.
Why this is worth an hour a month
None of this is exciting. Working out your numbers. Writing down how you do things. Separating the accounts properly. Requesting a free identifier from a company most people have never heard of.
But that is precisely the work that converts something which makes money into something which has value, and the gap between those two is where most owners get stuck for years without realising there was a gap.
It also compounds quietly. Two years of clean records puts you in a completely different position from two years of good intentions, and the difference was an hour a month.
Start now rather than when you need it. Records cannot be created retroactively, and the version of you who needs them in two years is depending on what you do this month.

Square Banking
Separating the business money completely is what turns a thing which makes money into an asset. Square Checking has no monthly fee and no minimum balance, and your sales land immediately rather than waiting one to two business days for a transfer.

Frequently asked
How long before this starts working?
Longer than most people hope and sooner than most people fear. Give it a few months of steady effort rather than a few weeks, and judge it on whether enquiries are trending up rather than on any single week.
Do I need to spend money to start?
No. The highest-leverage steps here are free, and they are the ones almost nobody does. Tools help you measure and move faster. They do not do the work.
What if I have no time?
Then pick one thing from this and do it properly rather than five things badly. One change that actually happens beats a list you never start.
Is AI going to replace this work?
Not the work itself. It is genuinely useful for the repetitive parts around the work, and that is where the hours come back. The judgment stays yours, and that is what you are being paid for.
