A funeral home asks for money from people in the worst week of their lives, on decisions that have to be made quickly and cost thousands, and often before insurance or an estate has released anything. The payment structure has to be firm in policy and gentle in delivery, because both matter and neither substitutes for the other. Here is the setup.

How funeral home money actually arrives
Four flows. At-need services: arrangements made after a death, priced from a general price list and usually paid before or at the service. Insurance assignments, where a policy benefit is assigned to the funeral home and paid after the claim processes. Pre-need arrangements: plans purchased in advance, which are heavily regulated and typically held in trust or funded by insurance. And merchandise: caskets, urns, memorial products, and printing.

By the numbers (July 28, 2026)
Rate that applies: 3.3% + 30¢ online or on a card-paid invoice, per Square's 2026 US pricing. On a $6,800 service balance that is $225. The ACH route, 1% with a $10 ceiling, costs $10.00 and keeps $215. Settled before services with the policy stated in writing at arrangement, so nobody has to negotiate with a family in the worst week of their lives.
Payment as policy, not as a conversation
The kindest structure is the one that requires no negotiation with a grieving family. State plainly, in writing at arrangement, that payment is due before services, present the options available, and let the policy carry the weight rather than the director. Families do not experience a clear written policy as pressure; they experience an unclear one as a series of awkward moments. Funeral homes that collect before services also avoid the position of pursuing a family months later, which is bad for them and worse for the family.
Tool I Use
Take cards and send bills with Square
Get paid in person or online — free business bank account. You only pay when you get paid.
Try Square →Insurance assignments and estate timing
Where a life policy exists, an assignment lets the benefit pay the funeral home directly after the claim processes, which can take weeks. Verify the policy is in force and assignable before relying on it, use an assignment company if you do not want to carry the wait, and be explicit with the family about what happens if the claim is denied or falls short. Estate funds are slower still and often unavailable at the time services are needed, which is exactly why the arrangement conversation must be honest about timing rather than reassuring.
Tool I Use
Set up your LLC with MyCorp
They file the paperwork for you — no lawyer needed. You stay legal from day one.
Start With MyCorp →Pre-need, which is a different regulated business
Pre-need arrangements are governed by specific rules on how funds are held, whether in trust or through insurance funding, what may be guaranteed, and what happens on cancellation or relocation. Those requirements vary considerably by jurisdiction and are not optional. Pre-need money is not operating revenue, and a funeral home treating it as such is committing a serious regulatory violation rather than making a cash flow decision. Confirm the rules that bind you and follow them exactly.

Get your site online with Bluehost
Cheap hosting, free domain, one-click setup. This is where I tell every beginner to start.
Get Bluehost →Price disclosure, options, and the rails
Disclosure requirements around itemised price lists apply to funeral providers in many jurisdictions and exist so families can choose without pressure. Follow them fully. Where a family genuinely cannot pay, third-party funeral financing options exist and should be presented on their own terms rather than improvised into an informal arrangement. On rails, card is genuinely useful here because it lets a family pay immediately when they need to, while larger amounts and assignments settle by transfer.

What people ask me
When should a funeral home collect payment?
Before services, stated in writing at arrangement so the policy carries the weight rather than the director having a conversation with a grieving family.
How do insurance assignments work?
A policy benefit is assigned to the funeral home and paid after the claim processes, which takes weeks. Verify the policy is in force and assignable before relying on it.
Why is pre-need different?
It is governed by specific rules on how funds are held, what may be guaranteed, and cancellation. Pre-need money is not operating revenue under any circumstances.
What disclosure applies?
Itemised price list requirements apply to funeral providers in many jurisdictions so families can choose without pressure, and they should be followed fully.
What if a family cannot pay?
Present third-party funeral financing options on their own terms rather than improvising an informal arrangement that becomes a collection problem later.
