A fast food business processes more transactions per hour than almost any other small business, at tickets small enough that seconds and cents both matter. Add drive-through, delivery platforms, and a workforce that turns over constantly, and the payment setup becomes an operations problem rather than a finance one. Here is the setup.

Part of a bigger question. This is one example of a broader topic — How Do I Build Business Credit?. Start there if you want the full picture.
How fast food money actually arrives
Four flows. Counter and drive-through sales: high volume, small tickets, where speed is the constraint. Delivery platform orders, which arrive net of a commission far larger than any card fee. Own-channel online and app orders, where you keep the margin the platforms take. And catering or bulk orders, which are larger tickets booked ahead.

Which Business Is Right For You?
Take the 2-minute quiz and get matched to a business that fits your budget, your skills, and how much time you actually have.
By the numbers (July 28, 2026)
On Square's 2026 US card, this lane is 2.6% + 15¢ in person. Processing a $14.00 drive-through order costs $0.51. Taken while the order is assembled rather than after, since seconds at the window are worth more than the difference between any two rates.
Speed at the window and the counter
Every second at a drive-through window is throughput, and throughput is revenue during the ninety minutes that matter each day. Contactless as default, terminals that wake instantly, and payment taken while the order is assembled rather than after. Train for it explicitly, because a crew that waits for the customer to find their phone at the window is costing more per shift than the processing rate ever will. The same applies at the counter during the lunch rush.
Tool I Use
Take cards and send bills with Square
Get paid in person or online — free business bank account. You only pay when you get paid.
Try Square →Delivery platforms and the real margin question
Platform commission is typically many times the card processing cost, which means the important payment decision in this business is channel mix rather than rate negotiation. Know your actual margin on a platform order versus a counter order, price platform menus to reflect it where the agreements permit, and treat own-app orders as the channel worth investing in, since they cost a fraction of platform commission and put the customer relationship back in your hands.
Tool I Use
Set up your LLC with MyCorp
They file the paperwork for you — no lawyer needed. You stay legal from day one.
Start With MyCorp →Cash, shrink, and reconciliation
Where cash remains meaningful, it brings till variance, deposit logistics, and shrink exposure, all with a workforce that changes frequently. Reconcile every shift rather than every day, since a variance found within hours is traceable to a person and a transaction while one found a week later is simply a loss. Check bank cash deposit allowances against your actual volume, because per-hundred charges beyond a monthly cap can quietly exceed the account fee at food service volumes.

Get your site online with Bluehost
Cheap hosting, free domain, one-click setup. This is where I tell every beginner to start.
Get Bluehost →Tips, staff, and the rails
Where tipping applies, on-screen prompts materially outperform a jar and card tips must be routed to staff per your payroll practices, with the records that requires. High staff turnover makes simple systems essential: a terminal that a new employee can use correctly on their first shift is worth more than one with features nobody is trained on. On rails, card and contactless dominate the counter, delivery platforms settle on their own cycles, and catering orders are worth taking by invoice or link with a deposit.

What people ask me
What matters most in fast food payments?
Throughput. Every second at the window is revenue during the ninety minutes that matter each day, which is worth more than any rate difference.
What is the real margin question?
Channel mix. Delivery platform commission is typically many times the card processing cost, so own-app orders are the channel worth investing in.
How often should a fast food business reconcile?
Every shift rather than every day, since a variance found within hours is traceable to a person and a transaction while one found later is simply a loss.
Why do cash deposit caps matter?
Because per-hundred charges beyond a monthly free limit can quietly exceed the account fee at food service cash volumes.
What does high staff turnover imply?
Simple systems. A terminal a new employee can use correctly on their first shift is worth more than one with features nobody is trained on.
