Sixty-four percent of my audience said money is the blocker. So an approach requiring an ad budget is the wrong approach.
Part of a bigger question. This is one example of a broader topic — How To Start A Business With No Money. Start there if you want the full picture.
Marketing with no budget is not a compromise
Sixty-four percent of my audience said money is what is stopping them. So an approach that requires an advertising budget is the wrong approach for most people reading this.
The good news is that the highest-return marketing available to a small business costs nothing, and almost nobody does it.
Not because it is difficult. Because it is dull, and dull work waits behind whatever is loudest that day.
The seven that actually work
**1. Complete your business profile properly.** Every field, especially the services list, because that is where you state in plain words which jobs you take. Free, and the single biggest lever available.
**2. Make your details identical everywhere.** Same name, same address, same phone, same spelling. Inconsistency quietly tells a search engine you might be several different businesses.
**3. Ask for reviews that say something specific.** 'Great service' is worth almost nothing. A review naming the actual job and the actual area is worth a great deal, because it is the language customers search with.
**4. Follow up on every quote that went quiet.** Most lost work is lost to silence rather than to a competitor.
**5. Tell everybody who already knows you, specifically.** Not 'I started a business'. 'I help people with this exact problem — do you know anybody dealing with it?'
**6. Answer the questions your customers actually ask.** Those questions are what people type into a search engine before they call anybody. Write the answers once, publish them, and they work for years.
**7. Check whether AI recommends you.** Ask ChatGPT the way your customer would. If you are not named, you never find out — the job simply goes elsewhere.

Why these beat paid advertising for a new business
Advertising costs money and it stops the moment you stop paying. Everything on that list compounds and keeps working.
Advertising also requires you to already know what converts. A new business does not, which means you are paying to learn something the free methods teach you for nothing.
And a business with no reviews, an incomplete profile, and inconsistent details will convert badly whatever it spends. You are pouring water into a bucket with a hole in it.
So fix the bucket first. It costs an afternoon and it makes everything you do afterward work better.
Where this usually stalls
The obstacle is rarely knowledge. Most owners broadly understand what they should be doing, and the gap between knowing and doing is where the difficulty sits.
Part of it is that nothing forces you to. Nobody sends a reminder about your disclosure or your business profile. So it waits, and it can wait for years.
Thirty-three percent of my audience told me they research all day and never start. Research feels like progress and carries no risk of being wrong in public.
So make it deliberate. Put a specific hour aside. One thing done properly beats a list you never start.
What the first month should look like
Week one, work out the number. Whatever this is about, calculate your own version rather than accepting somebody else's.
Week two, do the free thing. There is almost always one and it is usually the highest-return hour available.
Week three, put something real in front of somebody real. An offer, with a price and a way to pay.
Week four, look honestly at what happened and fix the one thing that clearly went wrong.
That is a month, it costs nothing, and it moves you further than another year of reading would.

The Escape Plan
If you are ready to build your way out of the 9-to-5 on purpose, this is the one I would point you to. It gives you pick the right idea for your budget, prove people will pay, and know the exact math of when you can leave.
The timeline, so you can see where this is heading
The core principle has not changed since 1980. A material connection between somebody endorsing a product and the business behind it must be disclosed, so consumers can weigh the endorsement knowing what sits behind it.
What has changed is scope and enforcement. The Endorsement Guides were revised in June 2023, broadening the definition of endorsement and material connection in ways that capture content most small operators would never have thought of as advertising at all.
The Consumer Review Rule took effect in late 2024, addressing fake reviews, incentivised testimonials, and the suppression of negative feedback. In March 2025 the FTC published staff guidance specifically on the use of AI in advertising.
In December 2025 it sent warning letters to ten companies, naming four problems: fake reviews, undisclosed incentives for positive posts, insider testimonials without clear labels, and active suppression of negative feedback.
In January 2026 it established a dedicated AI enforcement unit, and the maximum penalty rose to $53,088 per violation. None of that is speculation. It is the published record, and the direction is unambiguous.
Why the honest version converts better anyway
Here is the part that gets lost in every compliance conversation. Being transparent about a paid relationship does not weaken the recommendation. It strengthens it.
A reader who can see that you earn from a link, and who then watches you say plainly that a competitor is the better choice for their situation, learns something important about you. They learn that you can be trusted, and that trust is what makes the next recommendation land.
The people who hide the relationship are protecting a short-term conversion rate at the cost of the only asset that genuinely compounds. And readers are considerably better at detecting it than most publishers assume.
So do it properly because it works, not merely because it is required. The compliance is a by-product of the honesty rather than the reason for it, and that is a considerably more comfortable way to run a business.
What to check on your own site this week
Look at it with fresh eyes. Where is the disclosure? Is it above the recommendation or below it? Could a normal person, reading normally, miss it entirely?
Read your testimonials page honestly. Who wrote those? Did anybody receive anything in exchange, including a free product or a discount?
Check whether you have ever removed a negative review because it was negative. That is suppression, and it was one of the four things the FTC named.
And if AI writes content that recommends things, decide now how you will handle that. None of this costs money. All of it is worth an afternoon.
The numbers worth knowing about your own situation
Very few people can answer these quickly, and each one is worth an afternoon of your time.
What does a month of your life actually cost? Not the version where you never eat out. The real one, including the things you would not be willing to give up. That figure is your income replacement target, and every decision downstream of it gets easier once it is written down.
What does one hour of your work genuinely earn, once you count the preparation, the travel, the admin, and the follow-up that nobody pays for? That number is almost always considerably lower than the one carried around in your head, and seeing it written down changes what you are willing to accept.
How many hours a week can you honestly give this? Not the optimistic answer you would give somebody at a party. The one that survives a bad week, a sick child, and a difficult Monday. Two weeknights and one weekend block is the shape that actually lasts.
None of this requires software or a course. It requires an hour and a willingness to see the answer, and the numbers are already true whether or not you choose to look at them.
The tedious thing that changes everything
None of this is exciting. Working out your numbers. Writing down how the standard job is done. Separating the accounts properly. Checking whether your disclosure actually complies.
But that is precisely the work that converts something which makes money into something which has genuine value, and the gap between those two is where most owners get stuck for years without ever realising there was a gap to cross.
It also compounds quietly. Two years of clean records and honest practice puts you in a completely different position from two years of good intentions, and the difference between those was an hour a month.
Start now rather than when you need it. The version of you who needs this in two years is depending entirely on what you decide to do this month.
The questions that come up most
How long before this starts working?
Longer than most people hope and sooner than most people fear. Give it a few months of steady effort rather than a few weeks, and judge it on whether enquiries are trending up rather than on any single week.
Do I need to spend money to start?
No. The highest-leverage steps here are free, and they are the ones almost nobody does. Tools help you measure and move faster. They do not do the work.
What if I have no time?
Then pick one thing from this and do it properly rather than five things badly. One change that actually happens beats a list you never start.
Is AI going to replace this work?
Not the work itself. It is genuinely useful for the repetitive parts around the work, and that is where the hours come back. The judgment stays yours, and that is what you are being paid for.
