Most people who want to start a business are missing the thing you already have. They have an idea and no expertise. You have expertise and no idea what to do with it.
Part of a bigger question. This is one example of a broader topic — What Is My Quit-Your-Job Number?. Start there if you want the full picture.
You already have the hard part
Most people who want to start a business are missing the thing you already have. They have an idea and no expertise. You have expertise and no idea what to do with it.
That is a considerably better position and almost nobody tells you so. As a welder, you know what fails, what codes require, what a job actually takes versus what the estimate said. That knowledge took years and it cannot be read in a weekend.
What you also have is the certification and the hours, which take years and cannot be faked. That is not a small thing. It is the barrier that stops most people entering your field at all, and you crossed it already.
So the question is not whether you have anything to build a business on. You do. The question is which one, and that is a much easier question to answer.

Creative, social, or technical? Find out which kind of side business you'd actually stick with.
What a welder can actually build
These are not hypothetical. Every one of them is a business somebody with your background is currently running.
The realistic options include mobile welding and repair, custom fabrication, and gates, railings and architectural metal. There are others, and those three are where most people with your training start, because the distance between what you already do and what the business does is short.
Further out sit things like equipment repair contracts, which take more capital or more time but use the same underlying knowledge. Those are year-two conversations rather than month-one ones.
The one I would point you at first is mobile repair, because breakdowns are urgent and urgency pays. It is the shortest path from what you know to somebody paying you, and shortening that path is the whole game at the start.
Why your knowledge is worth more than you think
There is a specific reason your expertise translates into money, and it is not the obvious one.
It is not that you can do the work. Plenty of people can do the work. It is that you know what actually goes wrong, and that knowledge is invisible from the outside.
Somebody entering skilled trades without your background will underprice, misjudge the time, and discover the problems the expensive way. You will not, because you have already seen them. That is worth real money and it is the reason people from inside a field outperform people who studied it.
So the thing to sell is not merely your labour. It is your judgment. And judgment is priced far higher than hours, which is why the shift from employee to owner is worth making even when the work looks similar.
How to start while you are still working
Forty-four percent of my audience said they want to build the side hustle first rather than leap. For somebody working as a welder, that is not caution. It is the correct read of the risk.
You have a job that pays and a schedule that is probably difficult. That is a constraint and it is also funding, which is what most people starting a business do not have.
So use the shifts. Build in the hours around them. Take one customer, serve them properly, and find out what the work actually is when you are the one responsible for it rather than an employee doing it.
You do not need to be ready. You need one person willing to pay, and that is a considerably lower bar than the one most people set themselves.
What it actually costs to begin
Less than you fear. That is the honest answer and it is worth being specific about why.
You already hold the credential. That is the expensive part, the part that takes years, and you paid for it already. Most of what remains is registration, basic equipment, and the willingness to ask somebody for money.
Register properly, because an unregistered thing that makes money is not a business and it is certainly not an asset. Separate the bank account from day one, because mixed money makes the books unreadable and quietly makes the business unsellable later.
Beyond that, buy only what you cannot serve a customer without. Everything else waits until profit pays for it. That single rule keeps more new businesses alive than any amount of clever planning.
Where AI genuinely helps somebody in your position
The reason most people working as a welder never build anything is not the idea and not the skill. It is hours. You are tired, the shifts are long, and the business work competes with sleep.
That is exactly where AI earns its place. Not doing the work, which requires your judgment. Doing the work around the work, which is what consumes the evenings.
Drafting the quote from the number you decided. Answering the same questions people ask before they hire. Following up on the enquiry that went quiet. Writing down the process so somebody else could eventually do it.
That is five to eight hours a month for most people, and when you have ten hours a week to give, five hours back is not a marginal improvement. It is the difference between this happening and not.
Why this waits and waits
Knowledge is rarely the problem. Most people broadly know what they should be doing, and the gap between knowing and doing is where the difficulty actually sits.
Part of it is that the right action is frequently uncomfortable. Asking somebody for money. Quoting a number that feels high. Finding out something you suspected. The discomfort is real and it is brief.
Part of it is that the important work never shouts. Nothing forces you to register the entity or document the process, so it waits behind whatever is loudest that day, and it can wait for years.
Thirty-three percent of my audience told me they research all day and never start. Research feels like progress and carries no risk of being wrong in public. But one tracked week of doing beats one more course, every time.
When you can expect this to work
I would rather set the expectation properly than have you quit in week five believing something is wrong with you.
The first month is usually quiet. Very few people know you exist and building that takes longer than any plan admits. This is normal and it is not evidence the idea was wrong.
The first real money frequently arrives between month two and month four, and it is smaller than you hoped. It matters enormously anyway, because it proves the loop closes.
After that it compounds, slowly and then less slowly. The people it works for are not the talented ones. They are the ones still going when the fast starters have already moved on.
Fifty-two percent of my audience chose the phrase I am meant for more. If that is you, what stands between you and it is almost never information. It is a decision, followed by an unglamorous week.
The numbers worth knowing before you start
Very few people can answer these quickly, and each is worth an afternoon of your time.
What does a month of your life actually cost? Not the version where you never eat out. The real one. That figure is your income replacement target, and every decision gets easier once it is written down.
What would you need to earn, per month, for this to be worth the hours? Most people never set that number, which means they cannot tell whether it is working.
And what could you charge, honestly? Not what you earn now as an employee. What the work is worth to somebody who has the problem and cannot solve it themselves. Those are different numbers and the second one is usually higher.
None of this requires software. It requires an hour and a willingness to see the answer, and the numbers are already true whether or not you look at them.
The first thirty days
Week one, write down exactly what you would sell and to whom. One sentence. If you cannot write the sentence, that is the first piece of work rather than a reason to read more.
Week two, find five people who genuinely have the problem. Not friends. People with the problem. Ask what they currently do about it and what it costs them.
Week three, put a real offer in front of them with a real price and a real way to pay. A refund promise removes their risk and gives you the only signal that means anything.
Week four, look honestly at what happened. Somebody trying to pay is a go. Polite interest is a no, and it is a cheap no, which is the entire point of doing it this way.
That is a month. It costs nothing but the discomfort of finding out, and the finding out is what everything else depends on.

MyCorporation — step one
Before anything else, the business needs to legally exist. That is what turns a thing which makes money into an asset you could sell, borrow against, or hand to somebody. Mixed personal and business money makes the books unreadable and quietly makes the whole thing unsellable.
MyCorporation handles the formation paperwork so you do not have to work out the forms yourself, and the registered agent service keeps your home address off the public record.

The usual questions
How long before this starts working?
Longer than most people hope and sooner than most people fear. Give it a few months of steady effort rather than a few weeks, and judge it on whether enquiries are trending up rather than on any single week.
Do I need to spend money to start?
No. The highest-leverage steps here are free, and they are the ones almost nobody does. Tools help you measure and move faster. They do not do the work.
What if I have no time?
Then pick one thing from this and do it properly rather than five things badly. One change that actually happens beats a list you never start.
Is AI going to replace this work?
Not the work itself. It is genuinely useful for the repetitive parts around the work, and that is where the hours come back. The judgment stays yours, and that is what you are being paid for.
