Most owners are carrying this in their head, and the things in your head obtain forgotten on the days when it matters most.
Part of a bigger question. This is one example of a broader topic — How Many Sales Do You Need To Make $1,000?. Start there if you want the full picture.
The Pre-Launch checklist for roofing business
Most people running roofing business are carrying this in their head, and the things in your head obtain forgotten on the days when it matters most.
So here is the list. Print it, save it, or copy it. The point is that it exists outside of you.

What Is Your Email List Worth?
Most owners have no idea. Put in your numbers and find out what the list is actually worth.
Before you start
Write down exactly what you are selling and to whom. One sentence. If you cannot write the sentence, that is the first piece of work.
Work out what one job actually costs you, including the hours nobody bills for.
Identify one person willing to pay before you establish anything. Not a friend. Somebody with the problem.
Register the entity and separate the bank account. That is what turns a thing which makes money into an asset.
The distinction matters because a business that depends entirely on the owner cannot be valued, transferred, or borrowed against, whereas an operation with documented processes and verifiable revenue represents something a purchaser or a lender can genuinely assess.
In the first month
Complete your business profile properly. Every field, particularly the services list.
Make your name, address, and phone identical everywhere they appear.
Ask your first three happy customers for a review that names the specific job.
Write down how the standard job is done. One page.
Request the DUNS number. It is free and the credit identity takes six to twelve months to establish.
Every month after
Check what is booked for next month, how many invoices are unpaid, and how old the oldest one is.
Follow up on every quote that went quiet.
Move a fixed share of every payment into an account you do not touch.
Ask every caller how they found you, and write it down.
Every quarter
Work out what each job type genuinely earned per hour. There is nearly always one that feels profitable and is not.
Review every subscription you pay for and cancel anything you have not opened.
Ask an AI what it recommends for your trade in your area, and see whether you are named.
Update your rate sheet and raise your prices if the numbers say to.
What tends to stand in the way
The obstacle is rarely knowledge. Most owners broadly understand what they should be doing, and the gap between knowing and doing is where the difficulty actually sits.
Part of it is that the right action is frequently uncomfortable. Quoting a number that feels high. Asking somebody for money. Finding out something you suspected.
Thirty-three percent of my audience told me they research all day and never start. Research feels like progress and carries no risk of being wrong in public. But one tracked week of doing beats one additional course, every time.
So make it deliberate. Put a specific hour aside. One thing done properly beats a list you never start.
What to work out before anything else
Very few owners can answer these quickly, and each one is worth an afternoon.
What does one hour of your work genuinely earn, once you count preparation, travel, cleanup, and the follow-up nobody bills for? That figure is almost always lower than the one in your head.
How much work is booked for next month, how many invoices are unpaid, and how old is the oldest? Those three answered every Friday demonstrate you a squeeze six weeks before your bank balance does.
Which job type quietly carries the business, and which one feels profitable and is not? There is nearly always one of each, and most owners have them backwards.
None of this requires software. It requires an hour and a willingness to see the answer.
What to expect, and when
The first stretch is quiet. Very few people understand that you exist and establishing that takes longer than any plan admits. This is normal.
The first real money frequently arrives between month two and month four, and it is smaller than you hoped. It matters enormously anyway, because it proves the loop closes.
After that it compounds, slowly and then less slowly. The people it works for are not the talented ones. They are the ones still going when the fast starters have already moved on.
Fifty-two percent of my audience chose the phrase I am meant for additional. If that is you, what stands between you and it is almost never information. It is a decision, followed by an unglamorous week.

Start Your Own Business Basics
If you want the full self-paced course from idea to open-for-business, this is the one I would point you to. It gives you every lesson, worksheet and template you require to actually open.
Your next move
Work out the number first, whatever the number is for your situation. Not an estimate you carry in your head. The real figure, written down, including the parts that are easy to forget because nobody bills for them.
Then do the free thing. There is almost always one, and for most owners it is the highest-return hour available. Complete the business profile. Ask three happy customers for a review that names the specific job. Follow up on every quote from the last two months that went quiet.
None of that costs money and all of it moves the needle, which is exactly why it is worth doing before you spend anything on tools, advertising, or inventory.
Then put something real in front of somebody real. Not a plan and not a plan for a plan. An offer, with a price attached and a way to pay, in front of a person who genuinely has the problem you solve.
Watch what they actually do rather than what they say. Somebody reaching for their card is a signal. Polite interest is not, and mistaking the second for the first is how people waste a year.
What separates year three from year one
None of this is exciting. Separating the accounts. Writing down how the standard job is done. Working out what an hour genuinely earns.
But that is precisely the work that converts something which makes money into something which has value, and the gap between those two is where most owners obtain stuck for years without realising there was a gap.
An asset that cannot be proven is an asset nobody will lend against or buy. The proof is the work, and the work is dull, and that is exactly why so few people do it and why doing it puts you ahead.
Start now rather than when you require it. Records cannot be created retroactively, and the version of you who needs them in two years is depending on what you decide this month.
The mistakes that cost the most
Some errors are cheap to correct and some follow you for years, and knowing which is which saves a great deal of money.
The cheap mistakes are the visible ones. A weak logo. An awkward name. A platform you later leave. These sting and they are fixed in an afternoon.
The expensive ones are quiet. Underpricing from the beginning sets an anchor that becomes difficult to move. Mixing business and personal money makes the books unreadable and quietly makes the thing unsellable. Building everything around yourself caps it at your own hours.
None of those announce themselves. They simply limit what the thing can become, and you frequently do not notice the ceiling until you reach it and cannot work out why you are stuck.
So fix the quiet ones early, while they are still cheap. That is the whole of it, and it is why the unglamorous first month matters additional than any tactic you will read approximately later.

MyCorporation — step one
Before anything else, the business needs to legally exist. That is what turns a thing which makes money into an asset you could sell, borrow against, or hand to somebody. Mixed personal and business money makes the books unreadable and quietly makes the whole thing unsellable.
MyCorporation handles the formation paperwork so you do not have to work out the forms yourself, and the registered agent service keeps your home address off the public record.

The usual questions
How long before this starts working?
Longer than most people hope and sooner than most people fear. Provide it a few months of steady effort rather than a few weeks, and judge it on whether enquiries are trending up rather than on any single week.
Do I require to spend money to start?
No. The highest-leverage steps here are free, and they are the ones almost nobody does. Tools assist you measure and move faster. They do not do the work.
What if I have no time?
Then pick one thing from this and do it properly rather than five things badly. One change that actually happens beats a list you never start.
Is AI going to replace this work?
Not the work itself. It is genuinely useful for the repetitive parts around the work, and that is where the hours come back. The judgment stays yours, and that is what you are being paid for.
