How Much Should I Pay For A Logo?

A small business should expect to pay $300 to $800 for a professional freelance logo, $299 to $1,299 for a design contest, and $2,000 to $5,000 or more for an agency with brand strategy attached (2026 US design pricing surveys). Under $300 buys AI tools and entry-level gig work. The price is not really buying the drawing, it is buying concepts, revisions, file formats, and the rights, which is where cheap logos actually cost you.

Current as of July 28, 2026. Data changes; this page is reviewed quarterly.

2026 logo prices by path

DIY and AI logo makers: $0–$100. Fine for validating an idea. Usually template-derived, often with limited or non-exclusive rights.

Gig marketplaces: $25–$200. Fast and cheap. Quality varies enormously, and source files or full rights are frequently upsells rather than inclusions.

Freelance designer: $300–$2,500. The workhorse range. US freelance rates run roughly $25–$150 an hour in 2026, averaging about $65. At $300–$500 expect one to three concepts, one or two revision rounds, and a basic file package. At $1,000–$2,500 expect a discovery brief, research, several revisions, vector files, color variations, and a light style guide.

Design contests: $299–$1,299. You post a brief and many designers submit concepts, so you are buying volume of directions rather than one designer's process. Higher tiers attract more experienced entrants.

Agency: $2,000–$50,000. Strategy, research, a full identity system. Correct for funded or established brands, overkill for a business finding its footing.

Run a logo contest on 99designs

Post one brief, get dozens of concepts from different designers, pick the winner. Contest packages sit in the $299–$1,299 band described above, with full copyright transfer on the winning design.

What actually drives the price

Four variables, in order of impact. Number of concepts: budget tiers include 1 to 3 directions; higher tiers include many more. Revision rounds: cheap packages cap them, premium ones may be unlimited. Deliverables: a PNG is not a logo package. You want vector source files (AI, EPS, or SVG), horizontal and stacked lockups, a one-color version, and a favicon-safe mark. Rights: full copyright transfer must be explicit.

The rights line is where budget logos go wrong. If you cannot get vector files and written ownership, you have rented a picture, not bought a logo, and you will pay again the first time you need it on a vehicle wrap or an embroidered shirt.

The checklist to send with any brief

Ask for exactly this and price stops being mysterious: vector source files, a horizontal and a stacked version, a single-color version, a version that reads at 32 pixels, color codes in hex and CMYK, and written full copyright transfer. Then get the quote.

Two designers quoting $400 and $1,200 for "a logo" are usually quoting two different scopes. Once the deliverables list is fixed, the quotes converge and you can actually compare them.

What a new business should spend

Pre-revenue and testing an idea: spend $0–$100 or nothing at all. Set clean type and a color, move on, and let the offer prove itself first.

Real customers and a real name you intend to keep: $300–$800 is the honest sweet spot. It buys a professional mark with usable files and clear ownership.

Retail, packaging, signage, franchising, or investors: $1,500–$5,000, because the logo will appear in dozens of contexts and a weak mark gets expensive at scale.

The most common mistake is not underspending. It is spending $2,500 on branding for a business that has not yet made a sale.

What people ask me

How much should a small business pay for a logo?

$300 to $800 for a professional freelance logo, $299 to $1,299 for a design contest, and $2,000 or more for an agency with brand strategy, per 2026 US design pricing.

Why do logo prices range from $25 to $50,000?

Because the price buys concepts, revision rounds, file formats, and rights, not the drawing itself. Budget tiers include one to three concepts and limited files; premium tiers include research, systems, and full ownership.

What files should a logo package include?

Vector source files such as AI, EPS, or SVG, horizontal and stacked lockups, a single-color version, a mark readable at small sizes, hex and CMYK codes, and written full copyright transfer.

Are cheap gig logos worth it?

For validating an idea, yes. For a business you intend to keep, the risk is missing vector files and unclear rights, which forces you to pay again the first time you need signage or embroidery.

What is a design contest and who is it for?

You post one brief and many designers submit concepts, then you pay the winner. Packages run $299 to $1,299, and it suits buyers who want to see many directions quickly rather than one designer's process.

When should a new business skip the logo entirely?

Before the first sale. Set clean type and a single color, prove that the offer sells, then spend $300 to $800 on the mark you will actually keep.
