Consulting is the fastest honest way to quit a job. You are selling something that already exists: the expertise your employer currently rents. There is no product to build and no audience to grow. The bottleneck is clients. So the consultant's question is specific: can I land two or three anchor clients before I resign, and can AI help me get there faster? It can, at almost every step. Here is the consultant's escape plan.

Part of a bigger question. This is one example of a broader topic — What Is Agentic AI For My Business?. Start there if you want the full picture.
The anchor client rule
Do not quit to look for clients. Land clients, then quit. The magic number is two to three anchor clients. These are recurring engagements that together cover 60 to 80 percent of your living costs before you resign. One client is a job with worse benefits. Two or three is a business. Your network can usually produce them, because people who know your work are your first market. Sometimes the best first client is, carefully and legally, your old employer after you leave.
By the numbers (July 28, 2026)
Payback figures assume existing revenue. Before that exists, AI shortens the work around the business, never the months of validation. The return figures for 2026: roughly $3.50 back per $1 spent, payback in 3–5 months for small businesses using off-the-shelf tools and 6–9 months mid-market.
Where AI accelerates the client hunt
Packaging your expertise. Tell AI what you do at work and who pays for that skill, and have it draft three consulting offers with scopes and deliverables. Employees think in job descriptions. Clients buy outcomes. AI is good at translating one into the other.
Prospect research at lunch speed. Paste a target company's news and site copy and ask what problems they likely have that you solve. Twenty minutes of homework per prospect becomes four.
Proposals in an evening. Give AI your scope, timeline, and price, and get a clean proposal draft to edit. Faster proposals mean a faster pipeline, and the pipeline is what sets your exit date when you are building it on nights and weekends.

Your Quit-Your-Job Number
Work out exactly how much your side income needs to cover before it's safe to leave.
Price from day rates, not salary math
Employees converting salary to hourly always underprice. A salary hides what employers really pay: taxes, benefits, equipment, and idle time. Consultants also do not bill every hour. Selling, admin, and gaps eat a third of the week. Ask AI to help you model it properly. Your target income. Realistic billable days per month. The day rate that math requires. The number will look high. It is correct. Charge it.
Leave clean: the legal ten minutes
Before anything else, reread your employment agreement. Non-compete clauses, non-solicitation terms, and IP assignments decide which clients you may pursue and when. Have AI explain the clauses in plain English. Then confirm anything gray with an employment lawyer for one paid hour. Never build your pipeline on your work laptop or on company time. Consultants live on reputation, and how you leave is its first chapter.

The Second Paycheck System
If you have a job and want a reliable second income without quitting, this is the one I would point you to. It gives you a steady extra $500 to $1,000 a month built nights and weekends.
The countdown for consultants
Track one thing: signed monthly recurring revenue as a share of your cost number. Anchor clients at 60 to 80 percent with contracts signed. Six months of expenses saved. A pipeline of warm conversations behind them. That is the green light, and it commonly arrives in months, not years. This is why consulting suits people who want out faster than an audience can grow.

What people ask me
Why is consulting the fastest quit path?
You sell expertise you already have to a network that already knows you. No product to build, no audience to grow. The bottleneck is landing two or three anchor clients, and that takes months, not years.
What is an anchor client?
A recurring engagement signed before you resign. Two or three together should cover 60 to 80 percent of your living costs. One client is a fragile job. Three is a business.
How should I set my consulting rate?
Not from your salary. Ask AI to model your target income against realistic billable days, which is far fewer than working days. The resulting day rate will feel high and be right.
Can AI write my proposals?
It drafts them well from your scope, timeline, and price. You edit for accuracy and client specifics. Fast proposals matter when your pipeline gets built at night.
What legal issues should I check before quitting?
Your non-compete, non-solicitation, and IP clauses. Have AI translate the contract to plain English, then spend one paid hour with an employment lawyer on anything gray. Never prospect on company time or equipment.
