A handmade jewelry business sells high-margin pieces at low volume through markets, an online shop, and commissions, and it carries a risk most makers underestimate: valuable items shipped to strangers who can dispute the charge. Here is the setup, from market stall to custom order.

Part of a bigger question. This is one example of a broader topic — How Do I Build Business Credit?. Start there if you want the full picture.
How jewelry money actually arrives
Four flows. Markets and fairs: face-to-face selling where a phone reader does the work. Online shop and marketplace sales, which carry the most risk because the item is valuable, small, and shipped. Commissions and custom pieces: engagement rings, remodels, and bespoke work, which need deposits and clear specifications. And wholesale to galleries and boutiques, invoiced on terms or sold on consignment.

Which Business Is Right For You?
Take the 2-minute quiz and get matched to a business that fits your budget, your skills, and how much time you actually have.
By the numbers (July 28, 2026)
On Square's 2026 US card, this lane is 3.3% + 30¢ online or on a card-paid invoice. On a $480 online sale of one piece that is $16.14. Shipped tracked, insured, and signature-required, because on an item this size the dispute costs the whole amount rather than the fee.
The shipping and chargeback problem
Small valuable items sent by post are the profile disputes cluster around, and a maker who ships a ring without tracking or signature has no defence at all. Use tracked, insured, signature-required shipping on anything above a modest value without exception, photograph the piece and the packed parcel, and keep the proof of postage. Check what your insurance actually covers for jewelry in transit, since standard carrier cover is frequently inadequate for the values involved and many policies exclude precious items entirely.
Tool I Use
Take cards and send bills with Square
Get paid in person or online — free business bank account. You only pay when you get paid.
Try Square →Markets, and selling without signal
Fairs and markets need a reader that works offline or a phone that can hotspot, since a dead terminal at a two-day fair costs more than the equipment ever did. Bring a backup device. Price at round numbers so transactions are quick, keep a written sales log for reconciliation and stock control, and be prepared for the customer who wants to think about it, which in jewelry is most of them, by having a card and a way for them to buy later.
Tool I Use
Set up your LLC with MyCorp
They file the paperwork for you — no lawyer needed. You stay legal from day one.
Start With MyCorp →Commissions and the specification
Custom jewelry goes wrong over expectations rather than craft. Take a deposit at commission covering materials, which in this trade can be substantial, and write the specification down: metal, stone, size, finish, timeline, and what happens if the client changes their mind after materials are bought. Sketches or renders approved in writing prevent most disputes. For engagement and wedding work, build in more time than you need, because the date does not move and a late piece is a catastrophe rather than an inconvenience.
Tool I Use
Get your site online with Bluehost
Cheap hosting, free domain, one-click setup. This is where I tell every beginner to start.
Get Bluehost →Consignment, wholesale, and hallmarking
Galleries and boutiques often take work on consignment, which means your stock sits in someone else's shop and your money arrives after it sells, if it sells. Get the agreement in writing: the split, the payment timetable, insurance responsibility while they hold it, and what happens to unsold pieces. Wholesale on invoice is cleaner where you can get it. Separately, hallmarking and precious metal description rules apply in many jurisdictions and are enforced, so confirm what governs your pieces independently of how you take payment.

What people ask me
What is the biggest risk in selling jewelry online?
Chargebacks on shipped valuables. Use tracked, insured, signature-required shipping without exception, photograph the piece and packed parcel, and keep proof of postage.
Does standard shipping insurance cover jewelry?
Often not adequately. Carrier cover is frequently insufficient for the values involved and many policies exclude precious items, so check what yours actually covers.
What does a market setup need?
A reader that works offline or hotspots, a backup device, round-number pricing, a written sales log, and a way for hesitant customers to buy later.
How should commissions be handled?
A deposit covering materials, which can be substantial, plus a written specification of metal, stone, size, finish, timeline, and the position on changes of mind.
What should a consignment agreement cover?
The split, payment timetable, insurance responsibility while the gallery holds the work, and what happens to unsold pieces.
