Towing runs on three kinds of calls, and they pay three different ways. Volume calls from motor clubs, thin but constant. Rotation and contract calls, steady and structured. And direct cash calls, scarce but at full margin. The towing companies that thrive manage the mix deliberately, and then earn from the yard, the trucks, and the hours between calls. Here are ten revenue streams for a towing business.

Part of a bigger question. This is one example of a broader topic — What Does It Mean To Own An Asset?. Start there if you want the full picture.
1. Motor club contracts
The volume base. Roadside programs and motor clubs dispatch constant calls at negotiated, admittedly thin rates. The base keeps trucks moving and drivers paid. Manage it like the commodity it is. Track profitability per club. Drop the ones that lose money after fuel and time. Never let club volume crowd out the better-paying calls below.
By the numbers (July 28, 2026)
Motor-club contracts, impound work, and accounts each pay differently, and the mix decides whether volume is profitable. Only 9% of US small businesses clear $1 million in annual revenue, and typical small business profit margins run 7–10%, which is the frame every added revenue stream should be judged against (2026 data).
2. Police rotation and municipal work
The structured stream. Rotation lists dispatch accident and enforcement tows at set rates, with strict requirements. Response times. Equipment standards. Storage facilities. Insurance. Meeting the requirements is the moat. Rotation pays better than clubs, arrives around the clock, and feeds the storage stream directly.
3. Direct and cash calls
The margin stream. Calls that come straight to you, breakdowns, private requests, referrals, bill at your full published rates, often multiples of club pricing. Every marketing dollar in towing should aim here: local search presence, signage on every truck, and the reviews that make a stranded stranger call you instead of their app.
4. Roadside services
The tow-less revenue. Jump starts, lockouts, tire changes, fuel delivery, and winch-outs bill service call rates without loading a vehicle, in a fraction of a tow's time. Roadside calls are the best revenue per minute in the business when they come direct, and they seed the customer list. Today's lockout is next year's accident tow.

5. Heavy-duty towing
The premium division. Trucks, buses, RVs, and equipment demand heavy wreckers, real training, and serious insurance, and they bill at rates that dwarf light-duty work, with recovery jobs billing higher still. Heavy-duty is a major investment gated by expertise. Where the market has room, it is the single biggest rate jump in the industry.
6. Private property and parking enforcement
The contract stream. Apartment complexes, retail lots, and HOAs contract for parking enforcement under strict local rules. The rules are the business. Signage. Authorization. Documentation. Fee limits followed exactly. Run clean, enforcement provides steady nightly volume and feeds storage. Run sloppy, it provides hearings. Precision is the product.
7. Impound and storage fees
The quiet stream. Daily storage on rotation, enforcement, and accident vehicles accrues while you sleep, at regulated rates. Administrative and gate fees apply where lawful. Storage requires a compliant, secure yard and airtight paperwork, lien processes especially. The yard earns around the clock. That is more than the trucks can say.
8. Transport and dealer work
The scheduled stream. Dealer trades, auction runs, shop transfers, and customer vehicle transport bill planned moves at planned prices. They fill the daytime hours between emergency calls. Multi-car moves and standing dealer relationships turn transport into a route business hiding inside the towing company. With none of the 2 a.m. phone calls.

9. Fleet and commercial accounts
The relationship stream. Delivery fleets, contractors, municipalities, and repair chains need a towing partner with priority response and monthly invoicing. Fleet accounts deliver repeat volume at negotiated but healthy rates, smooth the seasonal swings, and cost nothing to serve beyond the reliability you already sell.
10. Equipment and specialty moves
The expertise stream. Machinery, sheds, containers, forklifts, and oddball loads that fit your equipment bill by the challenge, not the mile. Specialty moves come through word of mouth among contractors and farmers, price with healthy margins because few competitors quote them, and put your gear to work on jobs no app will ever dispatch.
Manage the mix, mind the yard
Run the business on two disciplines. First, the call mix. Track revenue and profit per call type monthly. Feed the trucks with club volume, but grow the direct, fleet, and heavy work that carries real margin. Any stream losing money after fuel and time must justify itself or go. Second, the yard. Storage, compliance, and paperwork run as their own profit center with their own audit. Manage the mix and the yard, and the company earns day and night, on the road and off it. That is the whole trick in a business where the phone decides your day.

Constant Contact
For a business that runs classes, services, or events, this is the one I point people at. Live phone support — which the big platforms genuinely do not offer at this price — and real event and RSVP tools built in. Plans start around $12/mo.

Square Banking
Separating the business money completely is what turns a thing which makes money into an asset. Square Checking has no monthly fee and no minimum balance, and your sales land immediately rather than waiting one to two business days for a transfer.

What people ask me
How should motor club work be managed?
As a volume commodity: track profitability per club after fuel and time, drop losers, and never let thin club calls crowd out direct, fleet, and heavy work at real margin.
What makes police rotation valuable?
Better rates than clubs, around-the-clock volume, and a direct feed into storage fees. The strict requirements, response, equipment, yard, insurance, are the moat.
Where is the best revenue per minute?
Direct roadside calls: jump starts, lockouts, tire changes at full published rates, in a fraction of a tow's time. Aim every marketing dollar at the direct phone call.
Is heavy-duty towing worth the investment?
Where the market has room, yes: heavy wreckers and recovery work bill at rates that dwarf light-duty. It is the single biggest rate jump in the industry, gated by training and insurance.
How do storage fees work as a stream?
Daily accrual on rotation, enforcement, and accident vehicles at regulated rates, plus lawful administrative fees. It demands a compliant yard and airtight lien paperwork, and it earns while you sleep.
